Now there are a couple of huge shifts in the college game and that does not even contain the enormous alignment of conferences, growing the Big Ten added up to 18 teams or the College Football Playoff increasing to the comprehensive 12-team that will give Penn State a fantastic chance to compete for a national title.
So let us consider six new rules that will be in force in college football as from the coming fall.
1. Two-minute warning
Everybody realizes how the 2-minute warning plays out in the NFL and it will be the same with college football beginning with the current season. This rule change has been made in accordance to the rule change that brought in the running clock after the first down excluding the last two minutes of the second and fourth quarters. The two minutes warning plays the role of such notification of that change and assists to decrease back-to-back TV timeouts.
2. In-helmet communication
The Wolverines’ march to the college football play-off final last season was overshadowed by sign stealing allegations and that forced college football to authorize in-helmet communication this year.
In-helmet communication is preprogrammed to be one way between the coach and a certain player; a green dot on that players helmet signals that the coach is talking to him. It will release the snap 15 seconds before the communications are lost.
This rule is practiced only for FBS teams but is not mandatory. There are some teams that will set basic hand-signals for huddling for play calls and even if one team decides not to use headsets, the other team gets to.
3. Video recording tablets to be used during gameplay
Communication devices in the helmets isn’t the only talented technology that is descending to the college football field. Teams will now have tablets solely for reviewing in-game video tape. Ideally, each team will have 18 tablets to assign in the locker room and the coaches’ boxed as well as on the field.
4. Horse collar tackles in the tackle box will be a 15 yard penalty
The horse collar tackle is already banned in the college football in 2008, however, the NCAA is extending it. The use of horse collar tackles will be considered a 15-yard personal foul if the incidence happens within the area of the tackle-box.
5. Conference-wide video review system
The decision is that replay review can only be done collaboratively and thus conferences will be allowed to undertake the replay review. With conferences now allowed to set up their own replay review system perhaps the process might be faster. Most of these rules will act to introduce quick time playing strategies and reduce the duration of a game.
6. In the period before and after the first and third quarters, head coaches are interviewed.
The head coaches will be interviewed more often as a part of this rule change, one to satisfy the sport’s broadcast associates. Now, instead of just dashing into the half or almost running away from the reporters into the tunnel, coaches will also do interviews with the sideline reporters during the after the first and third quarters.
